Summary

In this volume, about five thousand entrepreneurs, who were activated inThessalonikiduring the interwar period, are recorded.

The volume presents entries per enterprise in alphabetical order. Often, these enterprises attained different, continuous or parallel forms, which were comprised in the same entry.

The archives of the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Thessaloniki – and especially the registers of the new enterprises formed the basis for the drawing up of the entries. The data of the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Thessaloniki were completed by other sources, such as the Commercial Directories of Thessaloniki, as well as the cadastral sources which were revealed by the research. The outcome is a prolific sample of entrepreneurs and enterprises ofThessalonikiduring the interwar period, which have a double usage:

(a) The prosopographical recording with several information on the entrepreneurs of the city (religion, nationality, geographical origin, place of work, place of residence, forms of company, relative networks, geographic relations, entrepreneurship fate).

(b) The presentation of a general reflection on the entrepreneurship activities during a period, which coincided with the international financial crisis, something that resulted in the misfortune of thousands of enterprises.

Of a great interest are also the information concerning the scope of these enterprises, most of which were occupied with the fields of food and garments. Although the predominance of these fields is already known by the statistics, their percentage of the totality of the trading enterprises is over every expectation. This volume also includes the indexes of all the five volumes of the publication.
