Three talks by renowned architects Francois Roche&Stephanie Lavaux, Eva Franch and Michael Young who are invited to Thessaloniki as guest tutors for the international research workshop between Columbia University and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The joint workshop aims to research and suggest ways of mild development and exploitation of the unique coastal area which stretches from the port of Thessaloniki to the 'Delta' system of Axios River. The area is protected by the Natura Network and Ramsar conditions, however has remained abandoned and extensively polluted for the past years. The workshop is initiated and sponsored by the Northern Greece Entrepreneurs Cultural Society.
"Public Space and Art", talk by sculptor Kostas Varotsos
Internationally noted sculptor and professor of Architecture in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Kostas Varotsos, presented his lifelong artistic ouvre in Europe and worlwide, to members and friends of the Society at a talk titled "Public Space and Art". The work “Tension-Energy”by the sculptor, depicting the economic crisis and alienation in Europe, was unveiled in 2011 in Lucerne, Switzerland is the largest work of art ever displayed in a public space in the country.
“Ancient Messene: 1986-2010” Talk by Petros Themelis, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology
Organized by: Northern Greece Entrepreneurs Cultural Society, Navarino Network
The talk concerned the extensive project of archaeological excavations and restorations in Ancient Messene, directed by Professor Themelis since 1986.
The excavations, as well as simultaneous work of fixing and restoration have brought to light many public buildings and sacred monuments of the Ancient Messene, as described by Pausanias while visiting the town during the reign of Emperor Antoninos (circa 155-160 BC)
For his academic, scientific and excavation work, Professor Petros Themelis was honored with the Gold Commander of the Order of the Phoenix by the Greek President in 2005.
